In Loving Memory, Bertha Sky, Elder in Residence
Bertha Skye, Elder-in-Residence and McMaster University Honorary Degree recipient has passed peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on Thursday July 18, 2024.
On behalf of the Indigenous community at McMaster University, we are deeply saddened to share this news. Bertha’s time with us as Elder-In-Residence was marked by her unwavering dedication to enriching the lives of students, staff, and faculty through her wisdom, kindness, and cultural teachings.
Her presence was a source of comfort and strength for many, and her contributions to the Indigenous Studies Program, Indigenous Student Services, and the Indigenous Students Health Sciences Office were invaluable and have helped shaped the continued growth and success of our community at McMaster.
We understand that this news is particularly difficult for our Indigenous community. Bertha was a beloved mentor and friend to many, and her loss is deeply felt. Let us honor her memory by continuing to support one another and uphold the values she so passionately shared with us.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bertha’s family, friends, and those whose lives she touched over the years. We will remember Bertha for her warmth, generosity, and the profound impact she had on our community. Her spirit will continue to inspire us to honor and celebrate Indigenous culture, traditions, and knowledge. Rest in peace, Bertha Skye.
