The IHLL resource collection at MDCL 3510 houses primarily Indigenous authored documentaries, peer reviewed articles, journals and texts, policy reports, technical reports, fact sheets and grey literature from North America. It also includes global Indigenous health scholarship.

The IHLL Knowledge Broker, in partnership with the FHS library and archives, supports access to specialized collections on Indigenous health and health research. Please connect with the IHLL Knowledge Broker Laura Banfield for assistance in navigating your research and learning journey. Visit the FHS Library website which features the Indigenous Health Collection, and various database collections related to Indigenous health topics.

A variety of supports are available for your professional development.

Examples of eligible activities include:

Support for membership fees to professional associations such as the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC) and the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (CINA).
Assist with CARMs process.
Support to attend professional association annual mentorship forums and conferences.
Provide assistance for students’ professional development when presenting at conferences. For example, the Canadian Conference on Medical Education
Assist with accessing clerkships and electives off-campus and in communities.
Provide networking opportunities and mentorship with professionals in their field.
Engage in research and clinical practice/internships.
Opportunity to network with other students.
Registration fees (international allowed).
Examples of ineligible activities include:

International travel and expenses.
Purchasing of technology; i.e. new computer.
Events/programs outside of an academic program.

Requests will be evaluated based on its relevancy to the students’ professional development.

The amount allocated will vary from partial to total cost depending on the total number of funding requests received. Funding must allocated and expensed by March 31 of each year. 

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Complete a post-event report within one week of the event including expenses according to IHLL/McMaster financial policies.
Complete a GPP program survey.

All First Nations, Inuit and Métis students in the Faculty of Health Sciences graduate, postgraduate or professional program (full/part-time) are encouraged to apply!

The goal of this program is to enable you to be innovative, develop and demonstrate your leadership skills, as well as enhance your portfolio.

This  is an open program, and you are invited to submit your unique ideas and initiatives. You may be working with allied collaborators or solely leading an initiative. You are encouraged to apply early for funding approval. Funding for expenses may be covered directly through the IHLL Student Services or alternatively you may be reimbursed for pre-approved expenses.  

Examples of potential activities could include:

• a networking evening with refreshments
• Indigenous health speaker series event
• Development and delivery of a cultural event or workshop

Ineligible expense:

• Professional development for self (i.e. professional association membership fees, conference registration), please see information about the GPP Program
• Purchase of equipment
• International travel and expenses

How to apply for Developing Leaders:

Learners are required to apply using the following template and submit the completed form to the Learner Services Coordinator at LSCIHLL@mcmaster.ca. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come first-served basis and all funding must be allocated and expensed by March 31 of each year. 
The amount of funding will depend on the total number of funding requests received; amount requested for the event.

Learner responsibilities: The applicant must submit all receipts, and invoices for payment or reimbursement (please indicate which) and a post-event report must be submitted to the IHLL Student Services within seven business days of the event. Learners must agree to complete a Developing Leaders post-event survey.
